Percent Copper in CuSo 5 H2O Background The Law of Definite Composition states that the percent by mass of each element in a compound is constant. For example, sodium chloride is 39.3% by mass sodium and 60.7% by mass chlorine. Any sample of sodium chloride no matter what its size or origin will have that composition. In this experiment you will practice determining the percent silver in silver nitrate as a dry lab. This is called a single replacement reaction. The equation is: Cu() + 2AgNo, (?)--Cu(NO,), (ay) + 2Ag(,) or as a net ionic equation: Cu(,) + 2Ag+(aq)-? Cu2+(a) + 2A80) If the copper is weighed before and after the reaction, the mass of copper reacted can be determined. This along with the mass of silver can be used to determine the replacement ratio or moles silver produced per mole copper reacted. Practice using the data on your Report Form. Then do the experiment using zinc and copper (II) sulfate solution.

A materials scientist has created an alloy containing aluminum, copper, and zinc, and wants to determine the percent composition of the alloy. The scientist takes a 12.502 g sample of the alloy and reacts it with concentrated HCI. The reaction converts all of the aluminum and zinc in the alloy to aluminum chloride and zinc chloride in addition to producing hydrogen gas. The copper does not react with the HCI. Upon completion of the reaction, a total of 9.78 L...
