Answer #1

1. Biological species: The criteria needed to define a population in this concept is "a biological species is a group of individuals which can interbreed easily without any hindrance or isolation to produce a fertile offspring" means two individuals who can breed naturally and can produce healthy, fertile offspring is a biological species. (however this is not applicable for plants)

2. Morpho Species: This criteria states that "similar to identical morphological characters would reflect relatedness and therefore result in a species" that means those individuals who have similar or identical morphological characters like body shape, structure, etc falls under same species.

3. Phylogenetic species: This criteria states that "species are the smallest group of individuals on a phylogenetic tree related from other species from the same tree by a common ancestors" means to be a individual of a species one must have to characteristics related to the common ancestor of the tree, having complementary base pairs of DNA shared among all the members of the species and all the member species of the tree with the common ancestor.

Question 1 Can the biological species concept be applied to bacterial species M. bovis and M. tuberculosis? I think the answer is (A) but would appreciate confirmation and reasoning. A) No, M. bovis and M. tuberculosis don't reproduce sexually so species can't be defined based on the ability to interbreed. B) Yes, they are living, biological, organisms so the biological species concept is applicable. C) No, M. bovis and M. tuberculosis inhabit different hosts so don't interbreed in nature. Question...

Question 13 1 pts In a hypothetical scenario, imagine that you have discovered a rare species of bird on a remote Pacific island. You spend some time studying their ecology and habitation and discover that although these birds look alike, they are indeed two distinct populations with very different mating calls. You propose that these two populations must be two species since they are no longer able to mate with one another. Which of the following species concepts would you...

The biological species concept defines a species as a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring. This means that all members of these populations can contribute to a common gene pool. These populations belong to the same species. Genes are transferred between these populations through both direct and indirect gene flow. Biologists used genetic techniques to look for gene flow in 12 wild populations of mice. The populations (designated A...

Animals have general features in common All species of animal have general features in common. Check all of the features that would apply to animals. Check All That Apply o Animal cells possess a cell wall and are quite rigid. o Most animals have the capacity for active movement. o Animal zygotes undergo mitotic divisions called cleavage. o Not all animals are multicellular. o All animals produce diploid spores. o All animals are heterotrophs.
