The transmembrane domain of integral membrane proteins have hydrophobic amino acid residues that interacts with the hydrophobic fatty acyl tails of the membrane phospholipids. Hence integral protein is stabilized through hydrophobic interactions with the bilayer.

Peripheral proteins are associated with the polar head groups of the membrane phospholipids through weak electrostatic interactions.

Covalent interactions are responsible for anchoring the proteins to the phospholipid bilayer. For eg: GPI anchored proteins.
