A common lab experiment is to cross mutant Sordaria with the wild-type and observe the colouring ratios in the offspring. This experiment illustrates the concepts of genetic inheritance in a haploid organism. The ascus.contains 8 ascospores. Sordaria can give us information about crossing over during meiosis. If no crossing over then there is a 4:4 pattern. 4 black spores, and 4 tan spores all lined up. If crossing over does occur there is a 2:2:2:2 pattern visible, or a 2:4:2 pattern.
Therefore each recombinant ascus represents one crossover. If the other two chromatids also crossed over it would show the not change the 4:4 pattern as seen for no crossing over condition. We would not be able to distinguish these from non cross over phenotypes.
