Question 2 (5 points) You see an ad for a “miracle supplement” called NQP3 that claims the supplement will reduce belly fat. They say it works by reducing the hormone cortisol and by providing your body with missing unspecified “nutrients”, but they do not cite any peer-reviewed clinical studies. They show photographs of three people who appear slimmer after taking the product. A board-certified plastic surgeon endorses the product on television. Answer the following questions about this product:

a. Do you think that because a doctor endorsed the product, it really works? Explain your answer.

b. What are two signs that these claims could actually be pseudoscience instead of true science?

c. Do you think the photographs are good evidence that the product works? Why or why not?

d. If you wanted to do a strong scientific study of whether this supplement does what it claims, what would you do? Be specific about the subjects, data collected, how you would control variables, and how you would analyze the data.

e. What are some ways that you would ensure that the subjects in your experiment in part d are treated ethically and according to human subjects protections regulations?

Answer:

A).

I don’t think that because a doctor endorsed the product, it really works because he may be paid by the company for advertising their product. Hence, the only endorsement by the doctor is not a guaranty for the authenticity of the product.

B). two signs that these claims could actually be pseudoscience instead of true science are that company do not cite any peer-reviewed clinical studies and explained the fat reducing hormone cortisol and unspecified Harmon without any reference of research or study

C).

Only photographs are not good evidence that proves the product works because these people may be fake or telling lie because they were paid by the company for endorsement.

D). In order to get the strong scientific study of whether this supplement does what it claims. I will create two groups of 24 people. The first group contains 15 people and another group contains the remaining 9 peoples. Both groups will take the same dose of supplement for 10 days. Size of their belly and weight will be count on the first and last day.

The dependent variable is the size of the belly and weight of contestants.

Control variables are:

Number of contestants.

Number of days

Dose of supplement

E). In order to ensure that the subjects in your experiment in part d are treated ethically and according to human subjects protections regulations. Every contestant that participated in the test should know the real nature and purpose of the test and they are participating in the test with their will without any pressure.
