Determine the electron geometry (eg) and molecular geometry (mg) of PF5.

eg=trigonal planar, mg=octahedral
eg=tetrahedral, mg=trigonal pyramidal
eg=trigonal bipyramidal, mg=tetrahedral
eg=trigonal bipyramidal, mg=trigonal bipyramidal

eg=octahedral, mg=octahedral

Valence electron configuration of P 3s2 3p3 Excited electronic configuration of P 3s1 3p3 3dl P undergoes sp3d hybridization and produce 5 sp3d hybrid orbitals. each sp3d hybrid orbital overlap with singly occupied 2p orbital of F to form a sigma bond. So total there are 5 sigma bonds around P and there is no lone pair of electrons around P. hence electron geometry around P trigonal bipyramidal Molecular geometry trigonal bipyramidal. If all the electron pairs around central atom are bond pairs then electron geometry and molecular geometry both are same. trigonal bipyramidal geometry
