It is reffered as irreversible cessation of whole functions of brain, which included ,the brain stem.

Persistent vegetative state
It explains the chronic situation which invariably appears after coma. It consists of a return of wakefulness, reflex movements and sleep-wake cycles, along by a whole lack of mental or cognitive activity of any kind.
It is formed by intact function of brain stem and deeper areas of brain, without act of the cerebral cortex.
