The differences are

Whole grain Processed grain Refined whole grain
  • Bran, germ and endosperm are present in the grains
  • They are unprocessed
  • Complete with all vital nutrients
  • Rich in fiber
  • Eg.whole wheat, brown rice,millet, oats ,etc.,
  • High in quality and so the price
  • The bran and germ are removed from the grains
  • They are processed
  • Nearly 25% of vital nutrients are removed
  • Fibers are removed
  • Eg., white rice ,white bread, pasta ,etc.,
  • Poor quality and available at a very low cost
  • They are also processed grain with external nutrients added,so they are called as enriched grains ,fortified
  • There is no fiber
  • There are vitamins and minerals in it in substantial quantities
  • Eg.,refined oil, milk ,etc.,
  • Medium in quality and rate
