In humans, the placenta is usually disc shape, it is dark reddish - blue or crimson color. It is about 22 cm in diameter and 2-2.5 cm thick and weighs about 470g (1lb). And the center of placenta is thickest and the edges are thinnest.
Placenta connects the fetus by a umblical cord of 55-60 cm in length it contain two umblical arteries and one umblical vein.

Functions of placenta;
Placenta connects the developing fetus to uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, fight against internal infection and produce hormones to support pregnancy.
placenta provides oxygen and nutrients to growing babies and removes waste product from the baby's blood. It help in gas exchange via mother's blood supply , provide thermo regulation of the fetus.
