ethanol(the desired product) is produced commercially by the hydration of ethylene: C2H4 + H2O −→ C2H5OH

Some of the product is converted to the undesired product diethyl ether by the side reaction C2H5OH −→ (C2H5)2O + H2O

The feed to the reactor contains 53.7% mole C2H4 ,36.7% H2O,and the balance is non-reactive inert gases.these intert gases do not resct as they pass through the reactor. an ethylene conversion 5% and an efficiency as defined in your class notes of 90% are achieved . balance the chemical reactions and calculation the molar composition (mole%) of the reactor output stream ,and selectivity .

Synthetically produced ethanol is an important industrial commodity used for various purposes including: as a solvent (especially for substances intended for human contact or consumption); in coatings, inks, and personal-care products; for sterilization; and as a fuel. Although a great deal of attention has been given to the production of ethanol by fermentation of sugars, industrial ethanol is a petrochemical synthesized by the hydrolysis of ethylene: C2H4 (9) + H20 (v) = C2H5OH (v) Some of the product is converted...

Ethylene oxide is produced by the catalytic oxidation of ethylene: C2H4 (g) + 1/2 O2 (g) --> C2H4O (g) An undesired competing reaction is the combustion of ethylene to CO2. The feed to a reactor contains 2 mol C2H4/mol O2. The conversion and yield in the reactor are respectively 25% and 0.70 mol C2H4O produced/mol C2H4 consumed. A multiple-unit process separates the reactor outlet stream components: C2H4 and O2 are recycled to the reactor, C2H4O is sold, and CO2 and...

Problem 4: Ethylene oxide (C2Ha0), an intermediate in the production of plastics, is produced by the partial oxidation of ethylene (Reaction #1) C2H4+ O2 CH4O 25% 1. Reaction #2-the combustion of ethylene to form CO2 and H20-is an undesired side reaction: 2. C2H4+ O2 CO2 H20 (Note: This reaction is not balanced) Assume no other reactions occur-specifically that recycled ethylene oxide is not further oxidized. Pure oxygen (not air) is used in the...
