Primary difference between gene cassettes and composite transposons:

Gene cassette (integrons) is usually small (500-1000 base pairs) and can exists as either an integron or a free circular DNA. Gene cassette encodes integrase enzyme that mediates site-specific recombination events. Therefore gene cassette can exist independent of the replicon as free circular cassette.

Composite transposon on the other hand are flanked by insertion sequences on the left and right ends and contains one or more protein-coding genes that usually code for antibiotic resistance. Composite transposons cannot exist independent of a replicon.
