Hi there

Im having trouble with the last question on my lab report sheet. Would both equations be considered correct because they share the common ion effect? Please explain; thank you in advance!!

Both equations are possible, but equation a. Fe^3+ + SCN^- <==> Fe(SCN)^2+ is belived to be right.

In the given test conditions we have added 1:1 ratio (0.5 mL of 0.1 M each Fe^3+ and SCN^- ions) and color of the solution is red, this means equation Fe^3+ + SCN^- <==> Fe(SCN)^2+ is more feasible than other. If equation b. Fe^3+ + 3SCN^- <==> Fe(SCN)3 is correct then it should leave some Fe^3+ ions in the solution due to stochiometric relationship and we will observe a precipitate (Fe(SCN)3) at bottom of the test tube leaving some amount of supernatant above the precipitate (supernatant has Fe^3+ ions). If stable Fe(SCN)3 formed we can check a quick test for Fe^3+ ions in solution. The Fe(SCN)^2+ complex ions that absorb blue light and appears as a deep red color and this can be further confirmed by colorimetry.

The formation of complex Fe(SCN)^2+ is further supported by data from stress to the system (add 0.2 M Fe(NO3)3 data) adding more Fe^3+ ions, still it showed dark red color - hence equation a. Fe^3+ + SCN^- <==> Fe(SCN)^2+ is a valid statement.
