Step 1: calculate the moles of NO2

Given,

we know,

moles = mass given / molar mass

moles of NO2 = ( 17000 g / 46.0055 g/mol ) = 369.52 mol

Step 2: Calculation of  moles of HNO3

4 NO2(g) + O2(g) + 2 H2O(l) -----> 4 HNO3 (aq)

According to the reaction:

4 mol of NO2 produces 4 mol of HNO3

So, 369.52 mol of NO2 will produce = (4 mol of HNO3 / 4 mol of NO2 ) × 369.52 mol of NO2 = 369.52 mol of HNO3

Step 3: Calculation of HNO3 produced

we get moles of HNO3 that can be produced = 369.52 mol

Mass of HNO3 produced =( moles × molar mass ) = ( 369.52 mol × 63.01 g/mol ) = 23283 g

the mass of HNO3 produced in kg = 23283 g × (1 kg / 1000 g) = 23.283 kg

Hence, the mass of HNO3 produced from the amount of NO2 ≈ 23 kg
