a) Tautomerism is an important phenomenon and an example of this process is the equilibrium in Schiff bases. These bases can exist as an equilibrium between two species, keto ⇋ enol .

This process is affected by a number of factors such as solvent polarity, temperature and pH. The kinetics of tautomerism can be studied by UV-visible spectroscopy.

b) The keto–enol equilibrium constants at 25 °C were determined by studying the influence of surfactants on their UV-visible spectra. These measured equilibrium constants were used to obtain the reactivity of the ketones towards several nitrosating agents.
