In kidney - some substances like water, negatively charged ions, they can be absorbed passively. While substances like glucose and sodium they require energy for transportation. Hence they are transferred actively.

Plants produce their own food by using water and carbon dioxide inside chloroplast in the presence of sunlight. This process is known as photosynthesis. With this process plants plants form carbohydrates. And use those carbohydrates as food.

The overnight growth of plant is due to absorb of water by it's cells. Plants cell absorb water and elongates.
