Question

3. Based on the structure to the right what type of lipid would this figure below be characterized as?

R, CH2 -C-H R2 H2C NH3* H coo

a. Is this lipid more likely to move laterally 200 Å in the
bilayer or to move 50 Å in a transverse direction (through the bilayer) from one leaflet to another? Why?

b. You treat this lipid with phospholipase A2 to remove the fatty acid at position C2. You then place the extracted fatty acid into a non-polar solvent. What type of micelle would form under these conditions indicating clearly which part of the fatty acid is interacting with the non-polar solvent.

3) this compound is a phospholilids and it's name is phosphatidylserine BECASUE it's it's alcohol is glycerol and it's 3 hydroxyl groups is esterified with 2 acidic group of fatty acids and one phosphate bond and which is attached with serine.

If can move laterally but when it is present outside the membrane it is transverse into inner side and in case of apoptosis it goes outside from inside by scramblase .

B)the hydrocarbon chain of the fatty acid will interact with the hydrophobic solvent and will form micelle but the polar head group will be inside the micelles.

Thank you
