Answer #1

Ans : As an indicator organism for other pathogenic strains.

Non-pathogenic E.coli grows in the intestine of humans and animals. They are released in to the water through faecal matter. As E.coli is a faecal bacteria, it's presence is used as an indication for the presence of fecal contamination in water. Lots of pathogenic strains of bacteria grows in fecal matter, there fore the presence of non-pathogenic e.coli is an indicator for the presence of other pathogenic strains of bacteria and virus in the water. Also they produces Beta glucoronidase enzyme which enables easy detection of the organism in the water. Current acceptable limit of e.coli in fresh water is 900 cfu/ml and 500cfu/ml in marine water.

A cross was performed between a yeast strain that requires histidine and methionine for growth (His-Met-) and another yeast strain, which is His+Met+. One hundred asci were dissected, and colonies were grown from the four spores in each ascus. Cells from these colonies were tested for their ability to grow on petri plates containing either minimal medium(min), min+histidine (his), min+methionine (met),or min+his+met. The number of tetrads with four spores that can grow in different type of media is shown in...
