3.Starch or amylum is a polymeric carbohydrate consisting of numerous glucose subunits joined by glycosidic bonds.

4.The pancreas and salivary gland make amylase (alpha amylase) to hydrolyse dietary starch into disaccharides and trisaccharides which are converted by other enzymes to glucose to supply the body with energy.

6.A clearing around the bacterial growth indicates that the organism has hydrolyzed starch. Iodine has been added to this starch agar plate. The zone of clearing surrounding Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus subtilis indicate that both were able to hydrolyze starch. Iodine has been added to this starch agar plate.
