17. a) Mandible - Present in pairs, robust. They are chewing mouth parts and sometimes used for defence (in ants).

b) Maxilla - Partly help in mastication of food. Helpful in intake of liquid soft food. Also act as organs which sense touch and smell.

c) Labium - Aids in mastication of food. Odonates, damselflies,etc. flick the labium to latch onto the prey and bring it back near the mouth.

d) Hypopharynx - It contains the salivary glands and it aids in swallowing.

e) Proboscis - It helps in sucking of liquid food. A flexible part which can extend .

f) Stylet - Fused and modified form of maxilla and mandible used for piercing the skin of animals.

18. Devonian Period - around 400 million years ago, insects started flying.

21. Major parts of insect digestive system are :

1. Stomatodeum (foregut): This region stores, grinds and transports food to the next region. It includes the buccal cavity (with salivary glands) , the pharynx, the oesophagus, the crop and gizzard.
2. Mesenteron (midgut): Here the food is subject to a concotion of digestive enzymes which break down the larger particles to small absorbable parts. The mid gut is lined by microvilli which absorb the nutrients.
3. Proctodeum (hindgut): It consists of three sections : anterior ileum, middle colon and posterior rectum. Here water absorption takes place. Water is absorbed by Malphigian tubules and these also function in excretion.

22. We can differentiate a male from a female grasshopper by examining their reproductive parts :

Male : They can be distinguished by observing the cerci, furcula, subgenital and supraanal plates.

Female :

They have a dorsal ovipositor and ventravl valves.
