Starting with a population of genetically identical dragonflies, you discover two new mutant lines that are wingless. In both lines, the wingless phenotype is inherited in a autosomal recessive pattern. You cross a wingless dragonfly from one mutant line to a wingless dragonfly from the other line. All the offspring from this cross (line 1 X line 2) have wings, therefore you conclude the mutation that caused the wingless phenotype in the lines:

Select one: a. Was in two different genes. b. Was in the same DNA base position within the same gene. c. Was within the same gene, but not necessarily the same DNA base position.

Answer #1

The wingless phenotype is inherited autosomal recessive mutation means that dragonflies will have a wingless phenotype only if the mutant allele is in homozygous condition. The cross between homozygous dragonfly gives progenies having wings (wild-type).

The mutation that causes the wingless phenotype in the lines was in two different genes is the correct answer because if the mutation was in the alleles of the same gene the progenies produced from the cross should be wingless which is not the case. The wingless phenotype is the result of recessive mutation which means neither of the parents has a wild-type allele. The mutation is in the two different genes which may be involved in the development of wing formation in dragonfly. Therefore option A is correct.

The mutation was in the same base position within the same gene (b) and was within the same gene but not necessarily the same DNA base position is not the right answer because if this is the case progeny should have a wingless phenotype.

FIVE. You have identified a new mutant in Drosophila that defines a gene you call “red.” When mutant it causes the “neck” of the fly (cervical connective) to be red. It behaves as an autosomal recessive mutation with alleles red+ and red-. You suspect it is linked to two known genes on the second chromosome “re” and “ti”. The re- mutation behaves as an autosomal recessive. Homozygous mutant flies fixate on TV reruns, “re+” normal flies avoid TV. The “ti”...

5.) You have discovered mutants in two new gene mutants in Drosophila. One mutant, curl, has small, curly, nonfunctional wings. The other mutant, big, has enormous eyes. You decide to test if these two new genes are on chromosome #2, so you perform a three-gene linkage testcross using a gene that you know is on chromosome #2, trp, a mutant that cannot make its own tryptophan (and so must get it from its food). In all three cases, these mutant...

In Drosophila (fruit flies) the genes how, dumpy and ebony are located on chromosome 3. LOF = loss of function. Flies homozygous for a LOF mutation (no gene product made) in ebony have dark black bodies. Flies homozygous for a LOF mutation (no gene product made) in dumpy have truncated (short) wings. Flies homozygous for a partial LOF mutation (some gene product made but significantly less than normal) in how have wings that will not fold down (held out wings;...

You are interested in mouse eye development and conduct a genetic screen for mutations that result in strong eye defects. After treating a male mouse with ENU (a chemical mutagen that induces base-pair changes and small deletions), you identify four mouse mutants 1-4, each with defective eyes. You cross each of the four mutant mice with eye defects to homozygous wild type mice and examine the progeny from each cross. What type of information can you get from observing the...
