The sentence in the paper that suggests that they understood that the structure they proposed had a potential for replication is " Specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material".They meant that, upon separating the the two strands of the helical structure, each strand would serve as a template that can be copied into its complementary strand and together they would make another copy of the original, thus replicating.
