Soil Microorganisms are potential reservoirs for antimicrobial compounds as soil microbes survive and grow amidst tremendous competition. As opposed to commensal organisms like E. coli and other coliform bacteria, soil microbes live in environments that are not as nutrient-rich as animal guts, and must, therefore, limit their competition to be able to survive.

For this reason, it is likely that soil microbes developed anti-microbial compounds, to be able to regulate their competition and ensure survival.
