The mitochondrion is a cell organelle that is exclusive to the eukaryotes. They are the sites of cellular respiration which is a process that generates ATP from substrates in reactions using oxygen. Its major role is energy production from the oxidation of glucose substances and the release of adenosine triphosphate.
