a build up of pepsinogen in the stomach.

Explanation:

HCl is secreted by the pariental or oxyntic cells pf the atomach. And peptic or chief cell secretes pepsinogen from the stomach. HCl activates the pepsinogen and convert it into pepsin.

That's why when HCl or H+ is not produced in the stomach, then pepsinogen is not converted into pepsin. In this way pepsin is accumulated in the stomach.
