Autosomes are numbered chromosomes that determine all characteristics in an organism not linked to their gender. Thus, autosomes are not sex chromosomes. Humans have 22 pairs of autosomes and 1 pair of sex chromosomes. Autosomes will be present as pairs in an organism. The two chromosomes in a pair are identical genetically and morphologically. The sister chromatids of the chromosomes replicated during cell division is attached at the centromere. Even Sex chromosomes can be present as identical copies, XX in females.

Autosomes can be have genes that can be dominant or recessive. A single copy of Dominant alleles of genes on autosomes is sufficient to express the phenotype. Two copies of recessive alleles are required to exhibit the recessive characteristics.
