When blood is passing through the capillaries, it is put under lot of pressure as it is passing through very narrow blood vessels.
Because of the very high blood pressure, lot of plasma of blood comes out of the capillaries and occupies the gaps present in the tissue. This fluid in tissues is called tissue fluid. The tissue fluid does not have plasma proteins as they are big molecules and can't pass through the pores of the capillaries. In every tissue, the tissue fluid accumulates. If this happens continuously, the blood volume will decrease and the tissues will swell. To avoid such conditions, there is a draining system in the body which is the lymphatic system. From every tissue a lymph capillary originates which drains the tissue fluid. The tissue fluid passing through lymph vessels is called lymph. Number of lymph capillaries unite and ultimately open in to a vein to return the plasma back to the blood. This maintains the blood volume and also the tissue size. The lymphatic system is primarily a drainage system for the tissue fluid accumulating in the tissues. It also is important in defense , as it has lymph nodes where lot of WBCs and other defense cells are stored.
The lymph is originating form the blood plasma and gets drained by lymph capillaries and vessels.
The difference between lymph and blood plasma are:
1. Lymph has less plasma proteins than the plasma has.
2. Lymph originating from the gut will have more fats than blood as it absorbs it from the digested food of the gut.
3.Plasma flows in the blood vessels where as lymph is the tissue fluid that is being carried out by lymph vessels. So the lymph floes in lymph vessels.
