33) G protein linked receptor and an ion channel

Cholera toxin causes the G protein's  ADP ribosylation which causes it to remain activated all the time. Adenylate cyclase enzyme thus is activated all the time and cAMP is formed all the time, resulting in efflux of Cl- ions out of the cell through the CFTR ion channel and decreased influx of chloride ion. In order to maintain the ionic balance the intestinal cells will expel water out which results in diarrhea.
