The hydrogen ion gradient created by the pumping of protons during the electron transport chain is used for ATP formation. The proton gradient is created by electron transfer through 4 protein complexes present in inner mitochondrial membrane and these electrons are donated by NADH​​​2 or FADH2. The protons flow down the concentration gradient into the matrix through ATP synthase (F0-F1 complex or complex 5), causing it to spin and generates ATP from ADP and Pi.
