Glycolysis is the first stage of cellular respiration. During glycolysis, a glucose molecule is broken into two pyruvic acid molecules. Glycolysis occurs in cytosol.

In case of anaerobic respiration, pyruvate is converted into lactic acid or ethanol through fermentation. In case of aerobic respiration, pyruvate moves from cytosol into mitochondrial matrix. In mitochondrial matrix, two acetyl CoA molecules are formed from two pyruvate molecules through oxidative decarboxylation.

Acetyl CoA combines with oxaloacetate to form citric acid in mitochondrial matrix. Citric acid cycle occurs in mitochondrial matrix and produces NADH2 and FADH2 . Citric acid cycle also produces CO2 and ATP.

NADH2 and FADH2 are oxidized through a system located in inner mitochondrial membrane. This system is known as Electron Transport System. Since Electron Transport System is located in inner mitochondrial membrane, the location for oxidative phosphorylation is inner mitochondrial membrane. Oxidative phosphorylation is the stage of cellular respiration in which electrons are transferred from electron carriers such as NADH2 and FADH2 and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is synthesised. It occurs in inner mitochondrial membrane.
