Alternative splicing includes the skipping of an exon, retention of an intron or the use of alternative splice donor/acceptor sites (as indicated in chapter 8). 

What is the biological function of alternative splicing? (use examples to illustrate your arguments)

Alternate splicing is the process of producing different types of proteins from a single gene sequence (mRNA). It is highly regulated process, it is controlled by different regulatory protiens. In general splicing all the introns are spliced out and exons are ligated, but in alternative splicing it is responsible for diversity in protiens along with removal of introns. Overall function is to increase the diversity in expression of mRNA gene by producing different isoforms of proteins.

For example, in mamalian muscle troponin proteins. Its mRNA contains 5 exon site (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) during alternate splicing one form of troponin protein will contain exon no. 1, 2, 4, 5 and the another protein will have exon no. 1, 2, 3, 5. The change in exon no. cause change in mature mRNA gene sequence which will result in different form of proteins expression.
