Can you decipher the meaning of the genus name? What domain of life is this organism probably in? B2. 81. Methanohilophilus is a methanogenic bacteria which is strictly anaerobic. It utilizes methyl compounds e.g. methanol to produce methane. Methanohilophilus oregonese was 1st isolated from the alkaline & saline sediments in Oregon.

82. Genetic exchange also happens via bacterial conjugation wherein the 2 bacterium physically associate themselves via a bridge like structure called pilus. The donor bacterium transfers genetic material such as plasmid or transposon to the recipient bacterium. This is also known as horizontal gene transfer. Since no exchange of gametes happens or generation of new individual cell occurs, it is not considered sexual reproduction; only the existing cell gets new genetic material. Hence sexual reproduction is not the only mechanism for genetic exchange.
