The incubation temperature of both the petriplates is different. The 1st plate shows growth of ura3- strain, diploid X-Y, X strain and Y strain at a temperature of 23 degree. However in the 2nd plate where the incubation temeperature is 32 degree, only ura3- and diploid X-Y strains are able to grow. The mutants X and Y strains do not show growth at 32 degree. This essentially means that X and Y are mutants where genes are mutated which helps them to grow individually like ura3- strain. And the growth of diploid X-Y at 32 degree means that the mutated genes complement eachother so that when they are present together in a cell, a fully functional gene is formed and the diploid is able to grow at 32 degree.
