It catalyzes the thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) dependent decarboxylation of KG to form succinic semialdehyde (SSA).
Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase
It oxidizes SSA to succinate with the reduction of NADP+ to NADPH. This cycle enables the extraction of reducing power to drive reductive processes, while still directing KG to succinate.
