4. The gametophyte generation contains both an archegonium and an antheridium. What is produced by each structure, and what is the function of each structure? What must happen for the life cycle to enter the sporophyte generation?

antheridia is the male sex organ in bryophytes ,it andis loat in angiosperms and gymnosperms . it produces the male gametes for sexual reproduction . The gametes are pollen grains which are haploid. The function of antheridium is to store and release the male gemetes .

Archegonia is the female sex organ in a gymnosperms and bryophytes such as ferns,mosses etc . It is multicellular and flask shaped with a narrow canal leading to a broad base. Produces the female gamete for sexual reproduction. The gamete is ovum or egg.

Archegonia acts as the site of fertilisation for the sperm and egg.

For the life cycle to enter into sporophyte the haploid gametes produced by the gametophytes should undergo fertilisation to form a zygote which matures into a sporophyte body which is diploid. This sporophyte produces spores whhch forms gametophytes and the cycle of alternation of generations continue .
