Virus

Retroviruses such as HIV-1 ( Human immunodeficiency virus-1) contain copies of single stranded RNA molecule, after entering the host cell RNA is copied into DNA through the action of viral enzyme reverse transcriptase. Now the resulting DNA can be incorporated into the chromosomal DNA of host and replicated along with other cellular DNA.

Reverse transcriptase inhibitor drugs act by inhibiting RNA virus replication by reversible inhibition of viral HIV reverse transcriptase.

Recently in some species of bacteria such as Myxobacteria and E. coli reverse transcriptase enzyme was discovered.
