6. The autonomic nervous system composed of 2 components;

-Sympathetic nervous system (SNS)

-Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS)

Simiarities between SNS and PNS;

  • Both are the part of ANS.
  • both are originated from spinal cord.
  • both have an impotent in maintaing higher life-support.
  • composed of post and pre-ganglionic neurons.

Difference between SNS and PNS;

Sympathetic Parasympathetic
Involved in the fight or flight response. Involved in maintaining homeostasis and rest and digest response.
prepares the body for any kind of a danger. bring the body to a state of calm.
shorter neuron pathways, faster response time. comparatively longer neuron pathways, slower response time.
Increases heartbeat, muscles tense up. Reduces heartbeat, muscles relaxes.
The pupil dilates The pupil contracts.
inhibit saliva secretion Increases saliva secretion for digestion.

PARASYMPATHETIC NERVES Rest and digest SYMPATHETIC NERVES Fight or flight Dilate pupils Constrict pupils Stimulate saliva
