Black eyes are dominant to orange eyes, and green skin is dominant to white skin. Sam, a MendAlien with black eyes and green skin, has a parent with orange eyes and white skin. Carole is a MendAlien with orange eyes and white skin. If Sam and Carole were to mate, the predicted phenotypic ratio of their offspring would be _____.

1 black eyes, green skin : 1 black eyes, white skin : 1 orange eyes, green skin : 1 orange eyes, white skin

Can you explain with Punnett square?

Answer #1

Let the allele for black eyes be denoted as B, for orange eyes as b, for green skin as G, and for white skin as g.

Given that Sam has a parent with with both characters recessive (bbgg), while he himself is expressing the dominant character, implying that Sam is heterozygous for both characters (BbGg). He will therefore produce four types of gametes viz. BG, Bg, bG, and bg.

Carole also exhibits both characters recessive (bbgg). She will produce only one type of gamete i.e. bg.

Punnett square:

Carole

Sam

BG

Bg

bG

bg

bg

BbGg

(Black eyes, Green skin)

Bbgg

(Black eyes, White skin)

bbGg

(Orange eyes, Green skin)

bbgg

(Orange eyes, White skin)

Hence, all four possible types of phenotypes will be obtained in equal ratio i.e. 1:1:1:1.
