Genetic recombination is the process of exchange of genetic material between two chromosomes or between two cells or even between two organisms.

Crossing over is the process of exchange of genetic material between non sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes during prophase 1 of meiosis 1.

Vertical gene transfer is the process of transfer of genetic material from one generation to another, that is from parents to progeny.

Horizontal gene transfer is the process of transfer of genetic material from one organism to the other, provided, both the organisms belonging to the same generations or both the organisms belong to different species but are not parents and progeny of each other.
