Genetic transformation and recombination : already answered

Transformation in bacteria :

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the pathogenic bacteria which causes pneumonia in human being and was used by griffiths in his conjugation experiment.

R means rough, R strain of this bacteria was having a rough appearance and was not able to synthesise capsule which is the outermost covering of this bacteria.

S means smooth, S strain of this bacteria was having a smooth appearance because of its ability to synthesise capsule which provide pathogenicity to the bacteria.

Competence is the ability of a bacterial cell to pick up naked DNA from the environment. This can happen only when the plasma membrane and the outermost covering of the bacteria is having pores on it so that DNA can enter in the cell.
