Answer #1

Answer :

XLD agar stands for Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate agar.

Presence of Phenol red and a pH of 7.4 is what selectively differentiates between Salmonella and Shigella.

If an organism can ferment Xylose and produces acid, this lowers pH and hence the appearence will change from Red or Pink to Yellow. Salmonella can ferment xylose and hence appears Yellow.

Since Shigella cannot ferment Xylose and thgus cannot produce hydrogen sulfide, it remains as Red colonies.

Hence the answer is

Red colonies
