Answer: When two different mating types fuse in plasmogamy, it becomes heterokaryon for a while until karyogamy forms the zygote.

Sexual reproduction in fungi involves plasmogamy and karyogamy which finally results into the formation of a zygote. Its is then followed by meiosis stage. When two different mating types or haploid cells from two different mycelia come together and fuse, they form a heterokaryon which is n+n stage. It is then followed by fusion of nuclei or karyogamy and ultimately results into to a zygote (2n).

This diploid zygote undergoes meiosis or reductional division to form haploid spores (n) again. This sexual phase is then followed by an asexual phase of reproduction which involves mitosis and germination of haploid spores.

In all, the sexual and asexual phases together form the life cycle of a fungi.
