Answer #1

Note: Assuming data in missing G & H column are all negative (As stated by you).

When complementation occurs (Positive growth; indicated by plus sign), mutation is in the different genes. When complementation doesn't occur (Negative growth; indicated by minus sign), mutation is in the same gene.

From the table, we find that cross between A & all other mutants, C & D don't produce positive growth. Thus, no complementation occurs between A & C, D. As a result, mutation in A, C & D must be in a same gene & they will form a complementation group. Similarly, we find that no complementation occurs between B & F. So, mutation in B & F must be in a same gene & they will form a complementation group. Now, complementation occurs between E & all other mutants. So, mutation in E is in different gene from all other mutants. Thus, E will form a separate complementation group. Also, no complementation occurs between G & H (Missing part of the picture. Cross between G & H must produce negative growth). Thus, mutation in G & H are in same gene & they will form a complementation group.

1) So, number of genes will be 4.

2) So, complementation group will be- (A, C & D), (B & F), E & (G & H).
