Write the term symbol for the the ground state of NO and sketch out a molecular orbital energy diagram for NO and place the electrons in the levels appropriate for the ground state. You will need to look up the AO ionization energies for O2s, O2p, N2s, and N2p. The MO energies follow the sequence (from lowest to highest) 1σg, 1σu, 2σg, 2σu, 3σg, 1πu, 1πg, 3σu,. Define the 1σ orbitals as originating primarily from the 1s AOs on N and O, the 2σ orbitals as originating from the 2s orbitals, etc. Connect each MO level with the level of the major contributing AO on each atom.

Ruthenium (Ru) is commonly used in the manufacture of platinum alloys. What is the ground-state electron configuration for an atom of ruthenium? 1. Analyze the Problem Known: Unknown: Determine the number of additional electrons a ruthenium atom has compared to the nearest preceding noble gas, and then write out ruthenium's electron configuration. 2. Solve for the Unknown From the periodic table, ruthenium's atomic number is determined to .Thus a ruthenium atom contains electrons. The noble gas be preceding ruthenium is...
