ARP

• ARP is used to connect OSI Layer 3 (Network) to OSI Layer 2 (Data-Link)
• If router doesnot know the destination hosts subnet address , there comes a problem
• the problem is that it cannot deliver the packet accross the subnet
• To overcome this it creates ARP Request message to be sent to all hosts on the subnet
• ARP message asks the subnet with the corresponding IP
• For deliverinbg, Passes ARP request to data link layer
• The Data link layer then transfers ARP Request message to all hosts on the subnet
• Then host with corresponding IP responds
• Send a response ARP message with destination hosts subnet address
• Router delivers the to destination host
• This is how ARP works
