Protocols are set of rules defined in the network . Network protocols are basically classified into two types : - Connection Oriented and Connectionless protocol.
Connection-Oriented Protocol : - These protocols requires a logical connection to be established between the two entities before communication. The logical connection is established via set of rules which defines the process where connection is initiated, negotiated, managed and eventually terminated.
Connectionless Protocol : - These protocols do not need any connection establishment. When entities need to send the data , they just send it without any other process.The data usually is divided into packets and travel through different path and them assembled at destination. The process is called fragmentation and defragmentation respectively.
Example of Connection Oriented Protocols are TCP,telnet, ftp etc.
Examples of Connection less Protocols are UDP, tftp or other broadcasting services etc.
Benifits of Connection Oriented : - They are more reliable, guranteed sequencing of Packets, delayed duplicates are not there.
Disadvantage of Connection Oriented: - Slower, difficult to implement and maintain, vulnerable to router failures.
Benefits of Connection less: - Can be used where virtual circuits are not needed and easy to implement.
Disadvantage of Connection less: - Congesion control needed and is difficult, longer header files are there.
