Prokaryotes converting atmospheric N2 in to NH3.
The process of converting atmospheric N2 in to NH3 is called nitrogen fixation. This can be done by prokaryotes and not by plants. Plants can't do nitrogen fixation. Plants only can absorb the fixed N2 as NH3 and prepare their own aminoacids and proteins there after. Conversion of NH3 to N2 is called denitrification.
So prokaryotes converting atmospheric N2 in to NH3 is nitrogen fixation.

3. Nitrogen Fixation is a process by which some bacteria can convert N2 into ammonia. This process is very important in making the element nitrogen, a component of amino acids and nucleotides, available to ecosystems. Even though N2 makes up 80% of the atmosphere, nitrogen is the limiting nutrient in many ecosystems. Because nitrogen fixation is so energetically expensive, bacteria will only synthesize the proteins needed for this process if there is no available source of already fixed nitrogen, such...
10) The Haber-Bosch Process for nitrogen fixation is needed to make fertilizers such as ammonia (NH3): N2 (g) + 3 H2 (g) → 2 NH3 (g) The above reaction produces about 1.75 × 1014 g of ammonia each year, and is responsible for ~1–2% of the world’s energy consumption! This reaction is not very efficient however. Typically it only results in about 87% yield. How many grams of ammonia are NOT formed every year due to the inefficiency of this...
C. Nitrogen-fixation (10 marks) Atmospheric nitrogen does not easily react with other chemicals to form new compounds. On the other hand nitrogen is a major macronutrient for living cells; it is found in amino and nucleic acids. Nitrogen fixation is the biological process by which atmospheric nitrogen is converted by certain microorganisms into ammonium and incorporated into biomass. 1. Write out the overall reaction of microbial nitrogen fixation and include the electron balance (ie. write out the # of electrons...
