Prokaryotes converting atmospheric N2 in to NH3.

The process of converting atmospheric N2 in to NH3 is called nitrogen fixation. This can be done by prokaryotes and not by plants. Plants can't do nitrogen fixation. Plants only can absorb the fixed N2 as NH3 and prepare their own aminoacids and proteins there after. Conversion of NH3 to N2 is called denitrification.

So prokaryotes converting atmospheric N2 in to NH3 is nitrogen fixation.
