Rhizobium and cyanobacteria are nitrogen fixing bacteria. They contain enzyme nitrogenase which converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia.

Nitrigenase enzyme is inactivated by oxygen hence these bacteria have specific mechanisms to protect nitrogenase from oxygen and also carry oxygenic pbotosynthesis.

1.. legumes produce leghemoglobin which is a oxygen buffer having high affinty for oxygen, and decreses oxygen concentration in cytoplasm ,so that nitrogenase is not deactivated. And allows the respiration at low oxygen rate.

2. Rhizobium also have nitrate reductase enzyme which can convert NO3 into No2 called denitrification .this can form ATP under anaerobic conditions..

3. Some bacteria cause confirmational change of enzyme which is insensitive to oxygen . This is called conformational protection.
