a. Based on what you can determine from the context of the document, state what you think its purpose is or should be; briefly explain why this purpose makes sense for the given situation.

I chose Message 16.C: Follow-Up Message. The purpose of this message was to thank the company for the time they took to show the future employee around their facility. Another purpose for the message was to ensure the company they were the right choice for the job, based of experiences. These purposes make sense, due to the fact that this person was asked to come in for an interview for a company they seem genuinely interested in.

b. Identify the strengths and weaknesses (at least two of each) of this document in terms of how it achieves or falls short of its purpose. Important: Focus on the communication choices used, not the factual details involved, which you should assume to be predetermined.

Strengths: Very polite and to the point regarding the time spent with the company. The writer makes it seem that they are eager to work for the company.

Weaknesses: Grammar is of a very laid back tone, almost too relaxed. The writer appeared to justify their prior experience but made it sound awkward in the writing, as though he was trying to be better than he was in person.

c. Identify two sections or subsections in Chapters 15 and 16 of Thill and Bovée that seem to address the shortcomings you perceive in this document. Quote a relevant sentence or two from each section. (Be sure to put the words within quotation marks and put a parenthetical reference to the page number after the closing quotation mark.)

&

d. Based on your analysis of the document's strengths and weaknesses, revise it to redress the shortcomings of the original.

Thank you for the opportunity to visit your company and meet with you. I enjoyed touring the facilities at Starret Engine Company, and felt right at home talking to other employees. Everyone there was so friendly and willing to lend advice or insight about working there. I may have forgotten to add some of my experiences gained while in the Navy, and would like an opportunity to expand on them, if you feel necessary. While I do have engineering experience, I have other qualities as well. I look forward to hearing from Starret Engine Company and I look forward to possibly working there as well. If you or any of the staff have questions or need any further information, I can be reached at 123-456-789

Elroy had been with Barnes Machine Company a year since finishing a BS in industrial engineering (IE). Barnes had been in business for over 50 years, but the company had only recently moved from Detroit to Gainesville, Georgia. The public reason for the move was the economics of the old facility. Privately, based on comments he had heard, Elroy believed a shift to nonunion labor was a larger motive. Elroy’s boss is the production supervisor, Mr. Hill. Because the plant...

Certainly, the notion of effective advertising can vary from culture to culture.
