Two major type of secondary protein structure is present in alpha-helices and beta sheets.

Hydrogen bonding between the atoms in the peptide bonds along the chain holds the backbone together.

In an alpha helix, one sheet of C terminal amino acid sheet is parallel to the one N-terminal amino acid chain, shown in the above figure.

A beta helix is a protein structure formed by the association of parallel beta strands where both backbones of the protein chain are not parallel.
