In all cells Pyruvate is produced by the metabolism of glucose by the process of glycolysis. The fate of the Pyruvate is depend upon the availability of the oxygen and cell type.

In the muscle cell Pyruvate is fermented to produce lactate with the help of enzyme lactate dehydrogenase coupled with the oxidation of NADH to NAD+.

In the presence of oxygen, the Pyruvate molecule is converted to acetyl-CoA leads to the Krebs cycle to generate CO2.

While in case of plants and yeast, in absence of oxygen pyruvate is converted to ethanol by fermentation.
